fucking meth freak out

Bands I saw this week:

Penis Geyser: Almost incomprehensibly aggressive grind metal band composed of two guys. Sick stuff! Nice dudes!
Cunts (from Japan): Holy shit, holy shit. Two dudes, one playing drums and one screaming like a poisoned animal. At one point the singer got everyone to move up and then as a bebop meets fucking meth freak out drum solo was on, launched himself into the sparse crowd at the Mutiny like a human missile. He proceeded to roll around on the floor and produce some guttural screaming like he was vomiting and organ up. Nice dudes!
Spacegrinder (from Japan): So this guy sets up 3 mikes on stands and then, after some initial confusion as to what switch is connected to what gear, had all the lights in the back of the Mutiny turned off. The back of the Mutiny is far back from the street, so it was almost pitch black. Then some horrible harsh noise got on the p.a., loud as a storm that wakes you up at night, but mechanized. He gets up and starts yelling like he possessed into the mike, tossing the stands around, knocking out a couple of ceiling tiles. Eventually he lost the mikes and just yelled and yelled. Fucking terrifying. Great. Nice dude!  Another band, Galactic Scrotum was suppose to play, but they weren’t around for some reason. One of my friends gave me a flier for this show and I was all “I have to go to this” just based on that alone. It’s always great catching some fucked up bands at the Mutiny.

Thursday
Varaha: These guys were pretty good. Music to walk alone to during winter, when the snow is gray, and the sky is gray, and the trees are as black as oil. Kinda like Deafheaven without being all precious about it. Depressing but in a good way, I’m willing to check them out again. I told the singer/guitarist that and he laughed and said, “Good!”
Fin: I’m not sure if it was fin like a fish or fin as in the end, but I only caught half of their set due to having a beer with some friends. Fin is a two man old school black metal band. I was surprised they sounded so good.
Mantar: Another 2 man band, it’s a theme this week I suppose! But did you know that there are bands with up 5, maybe 6 people, that try their whole lives to be as fucking rocking as these two guys? Oh fuck! They killed and killed hard. I got one of their album and the blurb says something like, “A mix of doom, black metal and punk,” but live they sounded so rock and roll, with these great giant riffs. ROCK AND ROLL. Just monsters of rock. Highly recommended!
Cobalt: I like Cobalt, but after the sheer power of Mantar they just seemed sloppy and out of breath, but passionate, which could also describe how I make love. They were heavier than I thought they’d be, which is good. They had a the biggest crowd of the night, specially for a Thursday night at the Beat Kitchen.
